Watering equipment should help water reach the plants that need it without creating unnecessary waste or effort. Map your containers, new planting and water source before buying. A longer hose or more sprinklers will not correct an unsuitable watering routine by itself.
The buying decision
- Map the plants, water source and usable route.
- Check connector sizes and the filled weight of a can.
- Compare control and handling for the actual job.
Identify what needs watering
The RHS distinguishes container plants and establishing new plants from established planting suited to its location. Use that distinction to plan the equipment, rather than watering the entire garden on one schedule. Inspect the plants and soil and seek plant-specific advice when their needs are uncertain.

Measure the hose route, not the straight line
Measure from the tap along the route the hose will actually follow, including corners and obstacles. Check tap and connector compatibility, reel location and how the hose will be drained and stored. Excess length adds handling and storage, so compare practical reach rather than choosing the largest reel automatically.
Compare a watering can with a hose
A can can give useful control for a few containers, while a hose may reduce carrying where the area or physical effort makes a can impractical. Consider the filled weight you can handle, the shape of the handle and the space below a water-butt tap. Choose around the actual route and task.
Check drip-line controls before buying a system
For drip-line irrigation, ask how the system’s flow, pressure and timer settings suit your layout. Check which connectors, filters and supply safeguards the manufacturer requires. Avoid assuming all plants need equal amounts just because emitters look alike. Permanent mains-connected installations may need specialist advice on water-supply requirements.
Allow for restrictions and ongoing checks
Check your water supplier’s current restrictions before using a hose or irrigation system. Inspect connections for leaks, observe where water actually goes and adjust the setup when pots or planting move. Store equipment according to its instructions, including winter precautions; automated watering still needs inspection and maintenance.

Frequently asked questions
Is an automatic timer enough?
No. Settings need to suit the plants and conditions, and the equipment needs checking for leaks, blocked outlets and changes in the layout.
How long should my hose be?
Measure the usable route from the water source to the furthest required point, allowing for obstacles and the product’s connection arrangements.
