Garden seating needs to fit both the people using it and the place where it will stand. Mark out the arrangement before ordering. Include the path around the chairs, the space to pull them away from a table and somewhere to store cushions when required.
The buying decision
- Measure seat dimensions and movement around the table.
- Check individual load limits and ground stability.
- Confirm folded size or permanent footprint.
Measure the seat and the whole arrangement
Compare seat height, width, depth and armrests with seating you already find usable. Measure the table and the space needed to move a chair back. A compact product photograph can disguise the size of a complete set; use the listed dimensions and allow for people moving between the furniture.
Check the surface and the stated user load
Read the load limit for each chair or bench and check its intended use. Narrow feet can behave differently on grass, gravel and paving. Place seating on a stable surface and avoid solving wobble with an improvised support. Inspect hinges, joints and fixings as the manufacturer directs.
Compare folding chairs with a fixed bench
Folding chairs can change the layout and may store separately, but check pinch points, locking mechanisms and their folded size. A fixed bench has fewer setup steps but needs a permanent footprint. Compare where each option will live when it is not in use, not just its seating capacity.
Read material and cushion care requirements
Weather resistance does not necessarily mean every part can stay exposed indefinitely. Read the care instructions for frames, finishes, cushions and covers separately. Check whether cushion covers are removable and how they must be dried; putting damp items into sealed storage can undermine the convenience of a storage bench.
Treat shade and storage as separate purchases
If adding a parasol, check the pole, base and furniture compatibility and follow the maker’s wind-use instructions. A cover should fit the furniture shape and its care requirements. Include the space and cost for those items rather than assuming the seating set supplies a complete outdoor setup.
Before ordering
- Measure seat dimensions and movement around the table.
- Check individual load limits and ground stability.
- Confirm folded size or permanent footprint.
- Read separate frame, cushion, shade and cover instructions.
Frequently asked questions
Can cushions stay outside all year?
Check the instructions for the exact cushions. A frame described as outdoor furniture does not establish the storage requirements of its fabric parts.
Is a storage bench automatically suitable for sitting?
Only use it as seating if the manufacturer specifies that use and an appropriate load limit.
