A tent’s person rating is only a starting point. Lay out your sleeping mats, bags and luggage to establish what space you need. Then check whether the whole pitched tent, its guy lines and the approach to its doors fit the campsite’s pitch arrangements.
The buying decision
- Lay out the actual mats and bags.
- Check the footprint including guy lines.
- Practise pitching and verify included parts.
Compare floor dimensions with your sleeping kit
Look for the dimensions of the sleeping area rather than the tent’s total footprint. Measure the mats you will use and allow for their thickness beside sloping walls. Decide where bags and wet footwear will go; counting sleeping places alone may leave no practical storage or access.
Check doors, headroom and ventilation
Consider whether one person can leave without climbing over another. Compare doorway shape, usable headroom and the ventilation arrangements in the instructions. Mesh panels and adjustable vents may be useful, but check how they work when rain protection is deployed rather than assuming an open summer photograph shows every condition.
Compare carrying and pitching requirements
A quick-pitch tent may still have a bulky packed shape. For walking trips, consider the combined weight and where it will fit in your luggage; for car trips, check boot space. Review the pitching sequence, required people and included pegs, then practise before relying on the tent away from home.
Read weather claims as a complete system
Check the intended conditions, seams, groundsheet, guying and care instructions as well as any fabric rating. A single waterproof number does not establish performance in every pitch or storm. Follow the maker’s setup and site-selection advice and consider whether you need a different shelter for your intended trip.
Separate shelter from the cooking area
Government camping guidance says not to cook in a tent or use a barbecue inside one, including under an awning. Plan cooking away from the shelter and follow campsite rules. Extra ventilation is not a reason to bring burning equipment indoors; keep the sleeping space free of cooking appliances.

Frequently asked questions
Will a two-person tent suit two people comfortably?
Compare its sleeping dimensions with your actual mats and storage needs. The person count does not describe all the space you may want.
Does a fabric rating guarantee weather protection?
No. Construction, condition, pitching and the intended weather range also matter; read the complete model instructions.
