Website owners need evidence, not screenshots of a chatbot saying their company name. Google introduced important new reporting and control tools in 2026. This 2027 planning guide explains how to interpret those tools, distinguish AI impressions from visits and avoid confusing Google Search with Gemini Apps.
The steps here use official documentation available on 6 November 2026 and real, clearly labelled illustrative photography. If Google changes the interface in 2027, check the linked source before following an older screen-by-screen walkthrough.
Know what the numbers mean
- Google's new report measures impressions and reported URL visibility in Search AI features.
- Pages, country, device and date views help interpret changes.
- Search Console reporting for Google Search is not a complete Gemini Apps citation counter.
- Bing's AI citations use a different measurement definition.
- Customer enquiries and visits matter as much as visibility reports.
Which Google Search Console report shows generative AI visibility?
On 3 June 2026 Google introduced dedicated Search Generative AI performance reports, and said they reached all websites worldwide by 31 August 2026. The reports give website owners a separate view of how their URLs appear within Search AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative features in Discover. This is a useful change because AI-feature impressions had previously been grouped within broader Search performance reporting.
Google's official announcement lists the dedicated report's primary dimensions as impressions, pages, countries, devices for Search and date-based trends. Don't assume an AI impression is a website visit or that the new report proves the AI endorsed your product. Continue using ordinary Web performance reporting and your own website analytics to understand traffic and customer actions.

Verify your domain and keep the UK and international properties separate
Open Google Search Console and choose the correct verified domain. If your organisation has separate UK and international websites, maintain properties for each and avoid mixing the metrics. Use the exact page URL and URL Inspection to check whether Google's index contains a given article. Ask your developer to confirm redirects and canonical tags where several hostnames serve similar material.
For a business operating jasoto.co.uk and jasoto.com, separate reports help reveal whether the international site is actually becoming discoverable. The number of URLs published is not a substitute for indexed, useful pages. A valid sitemap supports discovery but cannot force Google to index a page.
Understand impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates
An impression indicates an eligible URL was shown in a supported AI feature according to Google's measurement rules. The pages view identifies which URLs have appeared. Countries and devices help interpret audience and presentation differences. Reviewing trends across dates can show when visibility changed, although a correlation with your edits is not proof that an edit caused the change.
Start with a baseline over a consistent period, such as 28 days, then compare the same length after a useful change has had time to be crawled. Record which URLs were updated and which reports you used. If a URL appears in AI features but gets no enquiries, its content may still be useful to readers without producing immediate business value.
Don't confuse Search AI reporting with Gemini Apps citations
Google AI Mode and AI Overviews are Search products. Gemini Apps can separately show related source links in certain responses, and not every Gemini answer provides them. Google's dedicated Search generative AI reports should not be described as a complete measure of every Gemini app response.
If you manually test Gemini Apps, document the exact prompt, language, country and date, and note any verifiable source URL. Do not claim that a business has a formal Gemini ranking based on a handful of prompts. An answer that mentions a company without a source is not evidence of a tracked citation.

Check the Search generative AI inclusion control
In Search Console, select a verified property and open Settings, then Search generative AI. Google says the inclusion setting allows a site to be considered as links and grounding content in specified Search AI features; excluding the property prevents that form of inclusion. The default on a top-level property is to include the site, while child properties may inherit a parent's selection.
Review this for each domain rather than changing settings automatically. The control is not a ranking boost, and it is distinct from Google-Extended and from a noindex directive. Record the setting and note whether a parent property governs it before deciding what to change.

Compare Google data with Bing Webmaster Tools
Bing Webmaster Tools launched AI Performance in 2026. Its reporting includes aggregate citations, the pages cited and grounding-query information across supported Microsoft AI experiences. A citation is a reference, not a guarantee of which position a business held within an answer or how often people visited the website.
Use both tools carefully: Google offers reported AI feature impressions, while Bing provides its own citation definitions. Their numbers should not be added together as though they measure the same event. Compare each series over time and focus on pages that answer important customer questions well.

Turn report insights into a useful editorial decision
Find which pages receive impressions and examine whether they answer a coherent question, make key information visible, link to related pages and contain accurate facts. If a local service article is vague, improve its genuine service details and customer questions. If two articles cover the same thing, consolidate or differentiate them instead of creating a third copy.
Use original examples that you can verify, such as a real repair process, published product specifications or an explicitly described methodology. Real photography is helpful when it demonstrates the subject. Licensed stock imagery can be used for illustration but must not be presented as a test result or work your business completed.
A simple monthly reporting routine
On the same day each month, export or record Search Console's overall Web performance and available generative AI report metrics for the two domains. Note important content releases, indexing changes and broken links fixed. Add Bing citation figures if your property has data. Then check analytics for visits, enquiries, registrations or purchases connected with the pages in question.
Write one clear conclusion: which page became more visible, what evidence supports that and what should improve next? Avoid reporting estimated rankings, fabricated impressions or supposed Gemini citations as actual results. The goal is reliable decisions and more useful content, not an impressive-looking dashboard.
Monthly AI visibility reporting checklist
- Verify each relevant Search Console domain property.
- Review pages and indexing for key guides.
- Check the Search generative AI control.
- Record overall Web clicks and impressions.
- Record dedicated generative AI feature impressions and source pages.
- Use country and date filters consistently.
- Review Bing AI citations separately where available.
- Note content changes and technical fixes.
- Measure actual leads, sales, sign-ups and qualified visits.
- Document what is observed and what remains uncertain.
Frequently asked questions
Does Google Search Console measure all Gemini App mentions?
No. The dedicated generative AI Search reports cover specified Search and Discover features. Gemini Apps are a separate experience and may show related sources.
Did Google add a new AI report in 2026?
Yes. Google announced dedicated generative AI reports on 3 June 2026 and said the rollout was worldwide by 31 August 2026.
Are AI impressions the same as website clicks?
No. An impression reports eligible display according to the report rules; a click or session requires a visitor action.
Can I opt out of Google's Search AI features?
Yes. Search Console provides a Search generative AI inclusion control at the property level. Review the consequences and inheritance before changing it.
