For an adult considering an app-controlled personal product, the connection is part of the buying decision. Check what the physical device can do on its own and what depends on a phone, account or online service. A remote feature should be evaluated alongside privacy, control and support, rather than treated as evidence that a product is more suitable or reliable.

Before choosing a product

  • Confirm nearby and internet connection requirements.
  • Review necessary and optional app permissions.
  • Identify local stop and access-revocation instructions.

Distinguish nearby pairing from internet access

Read the exact model’s description of Bluetooth pairing and any separate internet-based remote feature. Check supported phone systems, account requirements and whether the advertised function depends on a subscription. Do not assume a nearby wireless connection means the app never sends information elsewhere; the privacy notice and connection documentation address different parts of that question.

Review permissions and collected information before agreeing

The ICO’s smart-products guidance recommends checking data collection, sharing and app permissions. Identify which requested access is necessary for the feature you want and review optional choices during setup. The ICO currently marks this guidance as under review, so use its live page for updates rather than treating this article as a complete statement of data-protection law.

Find the physical stop and revoke remote access

Read how to stop the device locally, disconnect a session and remove another person’s access before enabling remote operation. Adults involved should agree freely to the activity and be able to withdraw that agreement. Verify the manufacturer’s instructions for ending a connection; a remote invitation is not permanent permission, and a failed app should not leave you guessing how to stop.

Check the support period and secure the account

NCSC guidance advises checking security-update support, changing weak default settings and maintaining software updates. Confirm the manufacturer’s stated support period for the device and app, use a unique account password and enable two-step verification where available. These steps reduce avoidable exposure; they do not establish that a connected product or service is impossible to compromise.

Keep physical care separate from software features

A working app does not establish that the device is suitable for immersion, a particular cleaning method or another intended use. Follow the model’s care and charging instructions, inspect for damage and confirm what the water-resistance documentation actually covers. Software modes should not distract from practical controls, storage, compatible accessories or the product’s stated physical limitations.

Plan for service loss and account removal

Ask whether the product remains usable if the app, phone or online service becomes unavailable. Identify the manufacturer’s process for removing paired users, clearing stored device data and closing an account when you stop using it. Keep these as separate checks: uninstalling the app alone does not establish that remote access or information retained by the provider has been removed.

Purchase comparison checks

  • Confirm nearby and internet connection requirements.
  • Review necessary and optional app permissions.
  • Identify local stop and access-revocation instructions.
  • Check update support and the account-removal process.

Frequently asked questions

Does Bluetooth guarantee that no information reaches an online service?

No. Check the app’s data practices as well as the device’s connection mode.

Is uninstalling the app enough to remove an account?

Follow the provider’s documented account and data-removal process; uninstalling alone does not establish deletion.
