Start with one service, one audience and one way for customers to contact you. A useful marketing plan makes those three things clear before adding more channels. Free promotion still costs your time, so choose work you can maintain and measure.
This guide separates free business profiles, your own website and community referrals from optional paid advertising. JASOTO is one directory option; it does not replace Google Business Profile or guarantee customers.
A focused plan for organic customer growth
- Choose one audience and a service you can explain clearly.
- Complete accurate free profiles and improve one useful service page.
- Share your work through relevant relationships and measure suitable enquiries.
Choose a customer and a specific service
Write down the work you want more of, the area you serve and the questions customers ask before booking. A domestic cleaner offering fortnightly visits in one town needs a different message from a consultant serving companies online. Describe the actual service and who it suits.
Use a simple sentence: “We provide [service] for [customer] in [area]. Contact us by [method] with [details needed] to discuss availability.” Replace every bracket with a fact. This is a writing template, not a claim about an existing business.
Where can I promote my business for free?
Check whether your business is eligible for a Google Business Profile. Google describes the profile as free; its eligibility and verification requirements still apply. A profile helps manage your presence on Google Search and Maps, while a website gives you space to explain your work in more detail.
Consider relevant directories where your customers might look. Yell and Yelp offer free business profiles or claiming options. JASOTO offers a free basic listing with no card or automatic paid upgrade, subject to review. Check each service’s current conditions and separate its free profile from optional advertising.
Search for an existing listing before creating another. If the service offers a claim route, follow that route for the correct business. Use consistent names, contact details and coverage rather than creating near-identical listings for towns you do not serve.
Make one service page worth reading
Answer the questions that decide whether someone contacts you: what is included, what is excluded, where you work, how appointments work and what information you need to quote. Add photographs you have permission to use and describe what they show.
A useful example is a cleaning page that distinguishes regular visits from end-of-tenancy work and asks for the property size before quoting. Avoid publishing unsupported prices, copied testimonials or qualifications you cannot verify. Put a clear contact action beside the information customers need.
Help search engines and AI services understand your information
Use clear headings, ordinary text and accurate business details. Google says its established SEO practices also apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode; there is no special AI schema required. Bing’s guidelines also address visibility in Bing and Copilot.
ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, so a website owner should check crawler access as well as page quality. These technical checks make content eligible to be discovered; they do not guarantee a citation, ranking or recommendation. Google’s AI Search guidance is not a promise of placement in the separate Gemini app.
Keep your own website and directory profiles current. Do not buy a service solely because it promises a number-one ranking or automatic inclusion in every AI answer. Ask what work will be delivered and how results will be measured.
Build referrals through relevant local relationships
Identify organisations that already serve your intended customers: local business associations, community groups or complementary businesses. Read their participation rules and offer something useful, such as a clear service guide or an introduction explaining when you can help.
Share your public listing or service page where it is welcome. Ask customers for honest feedback without scripting the result or offering incentives tied to positive reviews. Do not buy links, invent endorsements or send repeated promotional messages to uninterested people.
Run a four-week test
Treat the first month as a practical learning cycle, not a deadline for search rankings. Choose a small amount of work you can complete and record the starting point. Search discovery may take longer than this test.
- Week 1: check your contact routes, existing listings and service description. Record current relevant enquiries.
- Week 2: improve one service page and complete or correct the profiles you have chosen.
- Week 3: share the page with relevant contacts or communities where promotion is welcome; respond promptly to enquiries.
- Week 4: review which enquiries fit your service, which became bookings and how much time you spent. Keep, improve or stop each activity based on that evidence.
Measure customer outcomes before spending more
Keep a simple record of enquiry date, source when known, service requested, whether it was suitable and the outcome. Ask “How did you hear about us?” if the source is unclear. Do not treat every page view or search impression as a potential customer.
Compare completed bookings and useful enquiries with the time spent maintaining each channel. Analytics can miss referrals, and Google AI Search visits are not always separable from ordinary Google search traffic. Use these numbers as evidence alongside customer feedback, not as a complete record of every journey.
Put a limit on the time as well as the cash
Set a weekly amount of time you can actually protect, then write down which tasks must fit inside it. Include answering enquiries, checking opening information and preparing photographs, rather than counting only the minutes spent publishing. A free account that takes hours to maintain can be a poor fit for a very small team. Keep essential customer responses ahead of optional posting.
Make a separate list of cash commitments: printing, event fees, a photographer, hosting or optional adverts. Record the agreed amount, what it buys and whether it repeats. Do not assume a free trial stays free or that a promotional price covers the next period. Before buying anything, identify the particular uncertainty that the purchase is meant to resolve and who will review the result.
Turn a real customer question into a useful article
Choose a question that repeatedly stops a suitable customer from taking the next step. For a hypothetical furniture-restoration workshop, that could be what photographs to send before requesting an assessment. Explain the useful views, the information about damage and what cannot be judged from a photograph. This is a planning example, not a report about a business using JASOTO.
Write the answer in your own words and have someone familiar with the work check it. Distinguish observed facts from estimates and link to a primary source when explaining an external rule. Use a descriptive title, short sections and a clear contact route. Do not stretch a small answer into several near-identical location articles. A detailed answer belongs where it helps the reader make a real decision.
Reuse your own material without repeating the whole page
One useful service explanation can support a short social post, a printed information sheet and a conversation with a local partner. Give each version a purpose. A post might introduce the problem and link to the full explanation, while a leaflet supplies the essential contact details for someone who is offline. Check that every version describes the same service and current conditions.
Keep the approved original and note where it has been reused. When the service changes, update the page first and then review scheduled posts and printed stock. Remove or correct outdated promotional material you control. Do not copy a competitor's photographs or imply that an illustrative image shows your completed work. Ask permission before using identifiable customer material, and retain the agreed limits of that permission.
Make referrals easy to describe and easy to decline
Prepare a short explanation of the work you accept, the information you need and the public page where someone can check the details. A complementary business can then decide whether an introduction is useful without guessing about your availability. Avoid promising a reciprocal recommendation as a condition of contact. Explain any commercial referral arrangement openly rather than presenting it as an independent endorsement.
Community promotion works best when it respects the host's rules and the audience's attention. Ask an organiser about appropriate participation before sharing promotional material. After an event, record actual relevant conversations and any agreed follow-up instead of treating attendance as a sales result. Do not add people to a marketing list simply because they exchanged a business card; review the rules that apply to your proposed communications.
Check crawling and page descriptions before buying more tools
Ask the person maintaining your website to confirm that the intended public page is accessible, linked from relevant navigation and included in the site's canonical XML sitemap where appropriate. Check that robots controls do not accidentally block the page or tell search engines not to index it. A sitemap helps discovery but cannot force a search engine to index or recommend the content.
Where structured data is used, it should describe the content and genuine business details visible to readers. Do not add ratings, services or locations that cannot be supported. Clear questions and answers can make information easier for people and retrieval systems to understand, but FAQ markup is not a promise of a special search display. Google says its ordinary SEO foundations remain relevant to its AI search features.
Separate search visibility, AI citations and customer enquiries
Use the reporting you can actually access. Search Console can help assess Google search performance, while Bing Webmaster Tools has search and AI Performance reporting for supported experiences. A citation records a page being referenced in an AI answer; it is not evidence that someone clicked, contacted you or bought a service. Compare like reporting periods and keep their definitions beside the figures.
Combine those observations with your enquiry record. If visits increase but suitable enquiries do not, review the service explanation and response journey before claiming success. If an enquiry source is unknown, leave it unknown. Do not infer that an assistant recommended the business merely because a visitor used an AI tool elsewhere. Record what the customer actually tells you and avoid collecting more personal information than the task needs.
Decide what to keep after the first test
At the review date, look at work completed, time spent, direct costs and the quality of enquiries together. A channel may be worth continuing because it produces a small number of suitable conversations that the business can handle. Another may need a clearer message, and a third may be paused. Write the decision and the evidence so the next review does not depend on memory.
Keep changes manageable. If you alter the offer, page, photographs and promotion at once, you may not know which change helped. Use a dated change log and select the next question to investigate. Search rankings fluctuate and customer demand varies, so a short comparison does not establish cause. Continue maintaining accurate public details even when you stop a particular campaign.
Test the handover after somebody clicks
Ask a colleague unfamiliar with the campaign to follow the published route and explain what happens next. Check the phone number, form instructions and confirmation message. If the visitor must supply photographs or dimensions, explain that before the form is submitted. A campaign can create confusion when its promise and the contact page describe different services.
Record the checks and fix any mismatch before expanding the promotion. Keep the test clearly identified so a colleague does not mistake it for a genuine customer request. The useful result is a repeatable route from a clear explanation to an appropriate response, rather than a claim that every visitor will become a customer.
Before you start
- Confirm your business name, service area and contact details.
- Check for existing profiles and review each platform’s eligibility rules.
- Choose a contact method you can respond to reliably.
- Record your starting enquiries and set a review date.
Frequently asked questions
Can I market a small business without paid ads?
Yes. Accurate business profiles, helpful service pages and relevant referrals are activities you can start without buying ads. They still require time, and none guarantees sales.
Is a free directory listing enough on its own?
Usually it is one part of the journey. Customers also need accurate details, a relevant service and a reliable response. Keep your website and other profiles consistent and measure which channels bring suitable enquiries.
How quickly will I rank first on Google or appear in ChatGPT?
There is no guaranteed timescale or position. Publishing a page does not ensure indexing, rankings or AI citations. Use a first-month review to check the work and enquiry quality, then evaluate search performance over subsequent complete reporting periods.
Does a longer article guarantee better rankings?
No. Length is not a ranking guarantee. Publish useful original information that answers the actual question, check its accuracy and measure search visibility separately from customer enquiries.
Should I buy advertising before fixing my contact page?
First test that the service explanation and contact route work and that someone can answer. A paid campaign is difficult to assess if suitable visitors cannot complete the next step.
What does a Bing AI citation measure?
It records content being referenced in a supported AI answer. It does not establish a click, sale, ranking or recommendation of the business.
